What we store
An account is an email address and a password; the password is stored as a hash and cannot be read back. Beyond that the server holds only what you added yourself: materials, reading positions, vocabulary, notes and settings. For the Chrome extension — the names of the paired devices and when each was last seen. You can also start without an account: the server then keeps a guest record with no email address and no password, and everything you do is stored in it. Its key lives only on your device — in the browser or in the app. “Save progress” adds an email and a password to that same record. If you sign in to an existing account with guest progress on the device, everything from the guest moves into the account and the guest record is deleted.
What we do not do
There are no ads and no trackers in the app. Site traffic is counted by Cloudflare Web Analytics — no cookies, no browser fingerprint, no personal data: only the page, the country and how fast it loaded. We do not sell or hand your data to anyone, and we do not look into your materials for anything other than running the app itself.
Outside services
A word’s translation and an AI explanation go to outside services — Google Translate and Gemini: the word and the sentence you met it in are sent, and nothing else — no name, no email address. The spoken word goes through Microsoft’s speech service — only the word or the phrase is sent. The keys to these services belong to BuRead and live on the server.
Error reports
When the app breaks — in the browser, on the iPhone or on the server — an error report goes to Sentry: the place in the code, the screen it happened on, the device model, the OS version and the app version. Your email address, the text you were reading, the words you tapped and your network address are not in the report — sending them is switched off on purpose.
The Chrome extension
The extension sends nothing on its own. When you press Save it sends the address of the open page and its HTML to your account, so the article opens in BuRead the way you saw it; on a YouTube page — the video’s address, title and subtitles. It does not read your YouTube cookies: it asks YouTube itself for the subtitles without your session, and for a gated video it reads them from the transcript panel in your own tab. Tapping a word in learn mode sends the word and the sentence, the same as in the app. The extension’s key is stored in your browser and can be revoked in Settings.
Deleting
The account is deleted in Settings, together with everything stored on the server. What you downloaded stays on your device. Guest progress is erased in the same place. If the key is lost first — the site data is cleared or the app is deleted — the record stays on the server with nothing left to open it.
